Book Review

Since we are reading the book "The Mines Afire" We were asked to do a book review about it. In the book review it includes The Blurb , Genre, Age Rating and More. Here is mine.

Visiting Thelma Eakin

This Week we were very lucky to have Thelma Eakin in our classroom and ask her about her story "The Mines Afire". Thelma was very nice and answered all our questions with detailed answers. We learnt new things about the story like Mr O Flynn locked the door and that Thomas Carter was actual based on a real person who is living in Dixon house. Thelma also brought some things to show us like one of the Lamps they used to use to tell if there was poison in the mines, and Her Grammy Thelma calls it which is really a mini copper statue like the one at our flood wall. I really enjoyed Thelma coming to talk to us.

Brunner Mine Site

Since we have been reading the book "The Mines Afire" we were able to visit the Brunner mine site, Two Woman Mrs Meeres and Mrs Barbara take a day tour with fun activities around the Brunner mine site. First of all after we left school and had arrived at the Taylorville side we were all amazed at the 16f ft chimney. As we made our way across the Bridge we were able to see the old mine entrance just by the water. When we got there we were split up our group had to dress up into older clothes and shawls to take a photo. Then were did research about the mine and how coal is made (Coal was Peat that was underground as squashed with swamp). After we went on a walk to see the Memorial and the Old and the New Coke fire. At 1.00pm we went down to the Stilwater cemetery where we had a ceremony I had to read two pieces out of the poem Down the Brunner mine after we had to find out about the people and get the answers. Here are some photos
