Participating and Contributing

We are showing Participating and Contributing in an everyday situation by participating in a class activity set by our teacher in groups and in front of the class. We were also contributing by sharing our ideas to our peers and not putting ideas down and building on them. That's what our Participating and Contributing looks like,

Film Review

Yesterday we went down to the Regent Theatre in buses to watch the 2019 Film festival. For our first ever film festival the theme was Our Place, We were joined by Paroa and Kumara in the Theatre even though there were more schools they couldn't make it.
We watched some very cool short movies my favourite was Paroa's which went slightly off the theme and did a comedy movie. There was a range of different movies from Quality to Rushed but they all still looked really cool. Next time I would prefer if there was no theme.

The Shake Out

Yesterday at 1.35 pm nation wide everyone practised the Shake Out which is a practise drill for encase of an earthquake then followed with a tsunami caused by the hokitika gorge(For Greymouth Schools). We started with a intercom come through round the time of 1.35 - 1.40 pm which signalled that there was an earthquake so we dropped got underneath a table with our heads facing in holding our heads in a turtle position (Make sure your not near a window). Next we were warned on the intercom that it was safe to leave but there was a tsunami coming caused by the hokitika gorge so we evacuated and started heading up to our safe area which is at the top of a school friends driveway (We would be running in a real tsunami). When we got up to the hill Mrs O (Our Principal) started talking to us she always brings a rubbish bin filled with supplies just encase. After when we were cleared back to classrooms we talked about what we could do better, what did we think we did good and just answering some questions. I think Yesterday was a really good example for what we would do.

Here is my DLO on Enlarging an Image by a Scale of a Factor.

Book Review: All the Bright Places.

Image result for all the bright places

Just recently I have read this book and here is my review and a small summary of it.

Book: All the Bright Places
Author: Jenifer Niven
Genre: Young Adult, Romance & Fiction
Main Character: Theodore Finch and Violet Markey.
Rating: 5/5 Loved it!
Summary All the Bright Places is about two teens with depression. Violet’s sister died in a car accident the previous year and Violet blames herself for it. Finch has a long history of acting out and having sudden extreme mood swings. It is heavily implied that he is also bi-polar. At the start of the book both teens have suicidal thoughts, but Finch manages to talk Violet off of a ledge and Violet becomes Finch’s new reason for living. From there the story becomes about their budding romance as well as their personal growth. They learn about themselves and each other while exploring the hidden wonders of Indiana.

The Third task was about density and weighing out the glass, for this we had glasses and made 3 base colours Red, Yellow and Green. We used Yellow as the base with 4 tablespoons of sugar. We found this task really cool with how the colours didn't mix.

The last task was of our choice which we decided on an edible one ,Foamsicles which were like lemon meringues.

Writing Argument

We have been focusing around argument writing for the past week and making sure it has Strong adjectives and an emotionally toys with the viewers heart strings. For our topic we did "Should Children be aloud cellphones" We rounded the age to Under 13 and then got started I decided NO children shouldn't be aloud phones while others said yes. Here is my cellphone argument.

Should Children have Cell Phones?
Do you want your children addicted to a mobile device screen from such a young age, killing their child life and imagination and
only interacting with devices? Well…  I think NO, your child needs the right amount of exercise, a healthy life and to be able to
communicate to others.

Firstly Exercise, As a kid exercise and playing is a big thing that parents want them to continue through
till secondary school.  BUT… with a device your child will adjust to be all antisocial revolving around
their life and consuming all of their time. Quitting out of school activities and sport, And…  one of the
BIGGEST parent expectations of completing school work well that will be reinstated with social media
and other useless time wasting apps.

Secondly your child's health, They get less sleep, a negative impact on their mental health
,it also impedes their limit to learn and use their ingenious mind and constructs a behavioural
problem and an addiction towards the phone. The World Health Organisation have shared with us that using
cellphones have increased the number of brain cancer because of electrical impulses from devices.Imagine your child
with Brain cancer a lifetime sickness!

How would you feel if you were trying to communicate to your child and they are constantly ignoring you and on their device? Well there are other ways to communicate and sometimes the person is right in front of them and they IGNORE them for their device which is utterly DEPRESSING because they will end up with absolutely NO friends . Parents and Family it confines your time together because they are constantly listening to or playing on their phone. Is that something you really want? Because if you don’t stop this then your child will be an adult before you realise and  you will regret the lousy choice you made.

What do you think? Would you get your kid a phone under the age of 13 because their friends have one or they want it badly. WIthout a Phone you could have a Healthy social child who commits  to sports and other activities. With a phone an Antisocial , Unhealthy and unfit child… Is that what you want!?

Pink Shirt Day 2019

This Year for Pink Shirt day we decided to have a fundraiser at our school supporting the Upstander charity going with the whole school goal of being an upstander, we were undecided until we came up with the idea to bake gingerbread cookies with pink icing and sell them to the school and some parents. It was a hit and we made 100s of them selling them for $50c-$1 and we made a profit of $400 to go towards our charity. We found ourselves very successful and I hope we do it again next year.

Hanmer Springs Camp 2019

This year for camp we went to Hanmer Springs which includes all the activities such as...
Mountain Biking
We went Mountain biking around the Statue track which went for 2 hours and 30 minutes, I really enjoyed it the scenery in the forest was beautiful and you get really good specialized bikes.
Statue Walk
The Statues were amazing and really creative like the bear in a harness climbing a tree. And they were quite spread out, but we went the wrong way for about 5-10 minutes and got lost so we had to make our was back and get onto the track.
Conical Hill
When we went to Conical Hill we saw the sign that said 30 minutes up and 30 minutes down so we made a goal that we would get there in 20 minutes up and 10 minutes down so we ran and in the end we got 15 minutes up and 6 minutes down.
Tree Climbing
For Tree Climbing we were paired with Aria and we had to get into a harness and a helmet and we got to climb up to the top and squeak the toy. I made it up the big tree and I squeaked both toys.
Hot Pools
Everyone enjoyed the Hot pools and we were allowed in different selections of pools from boiling hot to cold.

Sri Lanka Explosions

At 8:45am on Easter Sunday Sri Lanka was set with a series of explosions that killed more than 300 people and at top-end hotels. It is the most violence the country has seen since the end of the civil war decades ago. Most of the victims of the attack are said to be Sri Lankan's but at the least 31 are foreigners.          But the real question was who was behind the bombing?
On Monday the day after they were to believe it was a little known group called National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) were to blame, the officials were still investigating whether it had international help.

Book Review

Since we are reading the book "The Mines Afire" We were asked to do a book review about it. In the book review it includes The Blurb , Genre, Age Rating and More. Here is mine.

Visiting Thelma Eakin

This Week we were very lucky to have Thelma Eakin in our classroom and ask her about her story "The Mines Afire". Thelma was very nice and answered all our questions with detailed answers. We learnt new things about the story like Mr O Flynn locked the door and that Thomas Carter was actual based on a real person who is living in Dixon house. Thelma also brought some things to show us like one of the Lamps they used to use to tell if there was poison in the mines, and Her Grammy Thelma calls it which is really a mini copper statue like the one at our flood wall. I really enjoyed Thelma coming to talk to us.
